Our facilities

Within our Department of Language and Linguistics, we aim to provide our research students with work and storage space, including laboratory facilities and access to online bibliographies, corpora and other resources.

Our University of Essex has excellent library holdings in all areas of linguistics, with online access to many periodicals and resources. We have open access computing labs running many software packages that our research students need in their work. We also have a number of resources for conducting linguistic research in psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics and language acquisition.

You need the following IELTS score:

  • Minimum required score: 7

Academic Requirements

For research study within our Department of Language and Linguistics, we normally require a good Masters degree, or equivalent, in a relevant discipline. A well developed research proposal is also essential.

However, if you do not have a Masters degree, we also offer a four-year integrated PhD, where your first year is spent doing a Masters before embarking on your research. This preparatory year ensures you develop your knowledge before embarking on your independent research.

If English is not your first language, then we will require you to have IELTS 7.0 or equivalent
