The program of doctorate in Law has the mention of excellence awarded by the Ministry of education by the resolution 6.10.2011 (BOE 201.10.2011). It is one of only two doctorates in law involving such mention among all Spanish universities organized doctoral programs, along with eight sectorial programmes in the field of legal sciences, which have also been distinguished with the mention .

The mention towards excellence award endorses the trajectory in third cycle training implemented at the Pompeu Fabra University in recent years, and which also involved previously an of ANECA quality award. Since the beginning of the program of doctorate in law at UPF, at the beginning of the 1990s, the purpose has been the develop sound strategies of training of researchers to contribute to the advancement of the frontiers of knowledge in legal science. This is both a fundamental research of academic Foundation as well as in the various legal sectors professional praxis-oriented perspective.

Verification of the doctorate in law is adapting to the new rules regulated by the RD 99/2011, January 28, in the PhD program of the same name which has been uninterruptedly taught at UPF since the 1993-1994 academic year. Courses 2007-2008 and 2008 - 2009 was an adaptation of the old PhD program to the requirements established in the RD 56/2005. During the 2009-2010 was a new adaptation of the doctoral program to RD 1393 / 2007, adaptation that has followed existing in 2010-2011 and 2011-2012. So, this is the last of the adaptations to the legislation of a consolidated program that has eighteen years of existence.

The program of doctorate in law at the UPF singles to integrate the different lines of research that are at the base of the research groups consolidated with projects funded in competitive public Convocations. The strategy of the programme has been the accumulating critical mass training avoiding the dispersion of the potential of researchers in law, with a program that integrates very active groups, winning dimension. The program integrates, in turn, in the Doctoral School of the UPF, and its strategy of I+D+i, assuming that in the framework of the third cycle only can be offered a program of quality with the sum certified career research groups.

The recent mention towards excellence obtaining, supposed signs of formative potential and knowledge transfer of the doctoral program, which in accordance with the received distinction must constitute an international reference in its field. Therefore, their high interest is manifest within the framework of the programming of the University system of Catalonia needs..

The training capacity of the program is the total number of theses defended in recent years, the rate of return of the students enrolled, the publications resulting from the doctoral training, the numerous rooms of mobility, as well as the research activities of the directors of thesis and research projects that are integrated, in addition to scholarships paid to students. In this sense, in the last five years (2006-2010) is advocated within the framework of the programme a total of thirty-eight theses for ninety-one registered. The students in the program have obtained twenty-one pre-doctoral scholarships from competitive calls for proposals. This information, in substance, is collected in the human resources section. The existence of conventions and mechanisms for collaboration with prestigious institutions in the field of law represent a suitable framework to carry out the projected training.

In this new phase, on the occasion of their adaptation to the rules fixed by the RD 99/2011, the program of doctorate in law at the UPF intends to contribute decisively to the improvement of the training of postgraduate with the significant increase in the number of doctors that can incorporate both the science and technology system and the productive sector. This is a bet which will be implemented in various annuities and their results will be achieved in the medium term. Since the basic assumption, which results from the new regulatory framework, to improve the quality in the formation of third cycle of academics and professionals is also by an increase in the number of graduates' doctors of the various programmes, which is subject to verification by UPF aims to significantly, contribute to this.

  • Doctorate students must register their Thesis Tutorial every academic year, including the academic year in which the thesis is deposited. The price of the thesis tutorial in the 2015-16 academic year is 401,12.

Requirements

Admission requirements to the Law - PhD programme
  • In order to be admitted to Law PhD Programme offered by UPF, candidates must provide accreditation that they have obtained an accredited undergraduate degree (Bachelor degree or recognised equivalent degree from an accredited Higher Education Institution).
  • Moreover, they have to proof that they have obtained or are in position to obtain an accredited graduate/master's degree (equivalent to a Spanish Master Universitario/Oficial, Master's of Research....) which enables them to access a Phd programme in their home country.
  • In order to access a doctoral programme at UPF, you need to have completed 300 ECTS credits, 60 of those have to correspond to an official graduate, research orientated master's programme.
Mandatory documents to be submitted
  • A photocopy of the undergraduate degree/diploma or Certification/proof of degree completion (Bachelor degree or recognised equivalent degree from an accredited Higher Education Institution).
  • A photocopy of the official final undergraduate transcript.

If you have finished your Master's degree when you formalise your application, you will need to send us the following documents:

  • A photocopy of the graduate/master's degree/diploma or Certification/proof of degree completion.
  • A photocopy of your official final graduate/master's transcript .

However, if you have not yet completed your graduate/master's studies when formalising application, you will need to provide us with the following documents:

  • A signed declaration of obtaining your graduate/master's degree before the commencement of the master's programme PDF document
  • A photocopy of the provisional graduate/master's transcript.

If the diploma or the academic transcript are not written in Catalan, Spanish, English, French, Portuguese or Italian, you will also have to include the respective sworn translations into Catalan or Spanish.

Students holding a Spanish DEA (Diploma de Estudios Avanzados) according to RD 778/1998 / Suficiencia Investigadora according to RD185/1985 or an undergraduate degree of 300 ECTS credits (such as Medicine...) will not need to have completed a master's degree.

All candidates must also present the following mandatory documents (please provide a photocopy):
  • Research thesis project PDF document
  • Two letters of recommendation.
  • Curriculum Vitae.
  • Identity Card or Passport.

  • Accreditation of English competence level B.2 PDF document
  • Letter of support from a researcher in the Department of Law eligible to be a thesis supervisor
  • Although it is not compulsory at the time of admission, the submission of a letter of support by students will be considered a great advantage. Applications accompanied by a letter of support will be given priority. Students failing to submit a letter of support must specify the Department of Law area in which they would be interested in doing research.
