Students are integrated into the international and inspiring environment of the department. The spectrum of possible Ph.D research topics ranges from pure over applied mathematics to mathematical statistics. Ph.D projects may also be interdisciplinary, with close connections to other disciplines, such as mathematical physics or biophysics.

Research priorities of the SMS are in mathematics and statistics including four main research areas:
SP1: Analysis and Geometry
Research topics are in gauge theory, differential geometry, topology, geometric and global analysis with relations to mathematical physics.
SP2: Algebraic Geometry and Number Theory
Research topics are in algebraic, arithmetic and diophantine geometry, as well as in analytic, algebraic and experimental number theory with applications in cryptography and computer science.
SP3: Numerical and Applied Mathematics
Research fields are inverse problems, partial differential equations, approximation, and discrete optimization. A strong focus lies on industry cooperations.
SP4: Mathematical Stochastics
SP4 focusses its research on dynamics and applied statistics with applications in financial mathematics, econometrics, biometry, and life sciences. Interdisciplinary work is particularly ensured by the Center for Statistics.
A link between SP1 and SP2 is given by the RTG 1493. A link between SP3 and SP4 is given by the RTG 1023.
Usually, the research group or department provides funding to their doctoral students in the form of either an employment contract or a scholarship (approx. monthly amount of scholarship or net salary: 1100-1400 EUR).
StudyPortals Tip: Students can search online for independent or external scholarships that can help fund their studies. Check the scholarships to see whether you are eligible to apply. Many scholarships are either merit-based or needs-based.
Testimonial Registration Module
Together with the ISIC Association and British Council IELTS, StudyPortals offers you the chance to receive up to £10000 to expand your horizon and study abroad. We want to ultimately encourage you to study abroad in order to experience and explore new countries, cultures and languages.
