About

Educational and research activities are designed to integrate qualitative process identification, rigorous mathematical treatment and modeling according to increasing levels of complexity, and presentation and design of ensuing applications and implications to engineering problems and scenarios.

Mission and goals

The Environmental and Infrastructure Engineering doctorate programme from the Politecnico Di Milano aims at providing effective and first-class skills in the fields covered by critical areas such as fluid mechanics, hydraulics, hydrology, hydrogeology and water resources, environmental technologies for water, soil and atmosphere, transportation technologies and risk management and mitigation, geodesy and geomatics, surveying, data analysis, archiving and representation.

Candidates are required to attend doctoral-level courses which cover a broad spectrum of topics, ranging from general theoretical and methodological aspects to focused and specialized subjects. Classes are chiefly grouped within the first three semesters of the program. Candidates progressively develop their own research project and ideas, leading to their PhD dissertation. The PhD programme strongly and actively encourages active participation to scientific congresses and summer schools as well as research cooperation with international research institutions. All research and educational activities are jointly coordinated by the PhD Tutor and Advisor.

Career Opportunities

A PhD in Environmental and Infrastructure Engineering provides highly qualified and skilled personnel for key positions and roles in research agencies, Public Bodies and Authorities involved in environmental policies, engineering companies, and industry related engineering applications.

English Language Requirements

You only need to take one of these language tests:

  • Minimum required score: 6

The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00. The minimum IELTS score requirement refers to which Overall Band Score you received, which is your combined average score. Read more about IELTS.

  • Minimum required score (Grade C): 180

The CAE test – or the Cambridge Advanced English – is an exam for applicants who wish to get a Certificate in Advanced English. To receive the Advanced certificate, test-takers must score between 142 and 210 on the Cambridge English: Advanced test. Read more about CAE.

Note: degree programmes and applications may require a more specific minimum score for admission.

  • Minimum required score (Grade B): 173

The FCE, or First Certificate in English, a certificate given for students who take the Cambridge English: First exam. To receive the certificate, test-takers must score between 122 and 190 on the Cambridge English: First test. Read more about FCE.

Note: degree programmes and applications may require a more specific minimum score for admission.

  • Minimum required score: 547

The TOEFL – or Test OF English as a Foreign Language – offers a paper-based test (PBT). The final, overall PBT score ranges between 310 and 677, and is based on an average taken from the three test components (listening, structure, and reading). The writing part of this test is scored separately on a scale of 0-6. Read more about TOEFL (PBT).

  • Minimum required score: 78

The TOEFL – or Test Of English as a Foreign Language – offers an internet-based test (iBT). The final, overall iBT score ranges between 0 and 120, and includes a scaled average from the four components (reading, listening, speaking, and writing). Read more about TOEFL (iBT).
