The Professional Doctorate in Health Sciences at the University of Westminster provides the opportunity to produce doctoral-level practice-based research based upon your professional expertise and the work of your organisation.

This degree is for senior practitioners, clinicians, team leaders, managers, and specialists working in the wide domain of life sciences.

We are particularly interested in applicants who wish to study in the following areas:

  1. Biomedical Sciences and diagnostic services.
  2. Health and well being: mens health, successful ageing, health promotion and behavioural change.
  3. Healthcare governance: clinical and integrated governance, the patient and service user experience, management of healthcare services.
  4. Nutrition: sports and exercise nutrition, international public health nutrition, food security.
  5. Public health.

Programme Structure

The first 18 months of the course are taught and comprises five doctoral level modules (level 8) which build the students research skills and develops them as leaders of research in their area of professional interest. The modules are:

  • Personal and professional development
  • Organisations; structure and analysis
  • Research design and planning
  • Research methods
  • Leading research to influencing practice

Each module contributes to the students own research project which begins in year two.

Attendance requirements

Students are required to attend the university for 18 days during the first the year, for eight days in year two, and by arrangement with their supervisor in years three and four. Study days will be spread across the year.

Academic Requirements

Entry Requirements

You should normally hold an upper second Honours Degree and a Masters Degree at merit or above and have at least two years appropriate work experience in a relevant field in a professional capacity.

If your first language is not English you should have an IELTS score of 7 with 7 in all components (or equivalent).
