Most students wishing to work at doctoral level in education will have already been working in the education sector for a number of years, as teachers, administrators, advisers, inspectors, etc. For some, the established PhD route of individual, in-depth study of one specialised topic is the most appropriate approach to research. The Education Doctorate Programme is offered at Bangor University.

About

For many others, however, there is a need for a new approach which provides a broad-based knowledge of a number of aspects of education together with the opportunity to research a specific issue of professional concern.

The EdD programme provides for those needs by combining taught units with an individually supervised thesis. The Education Doctorate Programme is offered at Bangor University.

English Language Requirements

You only need to take one of these language tests:

  • Minimum required score: 6

The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00. The minimum IELTS score requirement refers to which Overall Band Score you received, which is your combined average score. Read more about IELTS.

  • Minimum required score: 560

The TOEFL – or Test OF English as a Foreign Language – offers a paper-based test (PBT). The final, overall PBT score ranges between 310 and 677, and is based on an average taken from the three test components (listening, structure, and reading). The writing part of this test is scored separately on a scale of 0-6. Read more about TOEFL (PBT).

Academic Requirements

Prior study at Masters level is normally required for entry on to the EdD.
It is possible for students who have been following the MA in Education Studies programme to move up to the EdD programme after completing Part 1 of the MA without moving on to the MA dissertation. Transfer of credits into the EdD is evaluated case by case, as the EdD is essentially a research degree.

Applicants who are not native English speakers should have either an IELTS result of 6.0 or above, with no individual score lower than 5.5, or a TOFEL score of 560 paper-based or 220 computer-based, unless they have already studied at university level through the medium of English.

Applicants are required to be interviewed in person or by other means.
