The start of the present-day Vilnius Gediminas Technical University (VGTU) is deemed to be September 1, 1956, when Vilnius Evening Division of the Evening Faculty of Kaunas Polytechnic Institute (KPI) was established. A specialist in chemistry Assoc. Prof. Jeronimas Kudaba (1909-1992) was appointed the Dean of this division.

Vilnius Gediminas Technical University’s research has always been focused on the European Research Area. In order to achieve the best result in research, University shifts towards multidisciplinarity in science.
Now, the main research areas integrate electronics, IT, transport and social sciences. VGTU is ready to participate in national and international projects and to collaborate with business sector, it fosters national and international collaboration and helps to establish ties between research institutions and the business sector.

Currently, Vilnius Gediminas Technical University has more than 70 clubs and societies. University students and alumni can actualize their potential in folk dancing, choral singing, tourism, sports, photography and other fields.
Students can choose either to live in the University dormitory, private hostel or to rent apartment in the city.
VGTU international students dormitory is situated in the university campus, it takes about 7-10 min walk to the building of administration of the university and faculties of Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Business Management and Fundamental Sciences.
Faculties of Architecture, Electronics, Mechanics and Transport Engineering are located in the city; A.Gustaitis Aviation Institute is located near the International Airport.
The campus has a modern library as well as an integrated reading room, open 24 hours a day and offering students an access to study materials, study space, computers, and the internet.
