History
The Max Planck Institute for Terrestrial Microbiology was founded in 1991, with plans for three departments and one department-independent junior group. The founding director was Rudolf K. Thauer, Professor of Microbiology at the Philipps-Universität Marburg.

Housing services
The institute's guest house provides single appartments each with an own bathroom and a kitchenette to rent for a maximum period of three months. The rooms are furnished, fully equipped and provide internet access. The monthly rates are from €630,- to €780,- depending on location and availability.
Library services
The Max Planck Institute for Terrestrial MIcrobiology operate a library together with the Department of Biology at the Philipps-Universität Marburg. The library is located in the Department of Biology.
Campus life
The Max Planck Institute for Terrestrial Microbiology is located on the Campus Lahnberge, which hosts most of the faculties in the natural sciences, life sciences and medicine of the Philipps-Universität Marburg. Also, the university clinics are located on this campus.
