The VSB-Technical University of Ostrava is a technical and economic institution of higher education, the principal task of which is the provision of higher education based on free and internationally oriented research.

About

History

The predecessor of the Mining University of Ostrava was the Mining School in Príbram which came into existence by the emperor´s decree in 1849. The VSB-TUO has the right of conferring academic and scientific degrees, and doctor honorary degrees. The scientific and teaching staffs collaborate with research and academic institutions and specialists on national and international levels.

Education

Provides tertiary education in technical and economic sciences across a wide range of study programmes and courses at the Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral level.

Research

Research and Development are integral to the activities at VŠB-TUO. The focus on applied research and close cooperation with industry informs the teaching activities at the University.The strategy of science and research is based on six poles of excellence where the staff currently excel, and/or have the potential to excel in the future:

  • Raw materials, energy and environmental science
  • Computational sciences and information technologies

Housing services

University Hotel Garni offers accommodation as well as catering services.

Library services

The Central Library offers access to a wide range of resources to support teaching, learning and research at VŠB-TU Ostrava. The stock there consists of some 400,000 items (books, periodicals, standards, theses and dissertation, and other material).

ICT services

Wireless Local Area Network offers the students the possibility to connect to the internet with their laptop computer anywhere on campus. There are computer rooms in the Halls of residence area as well as in the University buildings for students.

Medical services

All international students must arrange health insurance before their arrival to the Czech Republic. When they do so, they are entitled to visit any general practitioner. A valid insurance card is required in all cases of medical care.
