Technical University of Ostrava, founded in 1849, originally as one of central Europe’s leading institutions in Mining, Geology, Metallurgy, and Materials Sciences. Over the years the University has grown along with the needs of local industry in this advanced, industrial region, including areas such as mechanical, civil, and electrical engineering, as well as IT, nanotechnology.

TUO is home to one of Central Europe’s largest job fairs, where over 120 firms compete for future graduates of the University. From large multinational firms to innovative start-ups, these companies come the University due to the high level of graduates, in part because the content of the coursework includes significant practical components, which facilitate learning on real-world problems using cutting-edge software and equipment. Feedback from industry consistently requests the University to produce a higher number of graduates. The Career Centre helps students prepare their CV’s, provides personality testing and career counseling to help guide graduates towards the most fulfilling work.
International student Contact Point is a central office offering wide variety of services to students. Contact Point is a student’s dedicated advocate, offering a single place to go to help solve problems as well as to realize opportunities on both the campus and the community at large, including assistance with visas, accommodation, acquisition of medical assistance and a variety of other issues. TUO’s international student club ESN offers a wide variety of activities and assistance for international students, and has been lauded as one of the top clubs in Europe, offering low-cost weekend trips to European cities, to parties, to volunteer opportunities for students.
On campus accommodation is guaranteed for all international students at a very affordable rate, less than €150 per month. Each room has internet access, and there are a high number of cooking facilities for students hungry for a taste of home. Connected to the dormitories are fitness centers, tennis courts and football pitches, as well as cafes, clubs, pizzerias, minigolf and other facilities, ensuring there’s no shortage of things to do in spare time. Excellent public transportation is right outside the door, connecting students to the entire city, country, and beyond.
The University has a well equipped library with a high number of scientific publications and texts, as well as place for study and research.
The University campus has wifi throughout, public computer terminals and internet centers, and an online system for access to course registration and scheduling, as well as daily ordering of lunches and dinner in the cafeterias.
The Region’s largest health care center, a high quality research hospital, is right across the street from the campus, ensuring quick access to excellent care.
TUO has the largest campus in Czech Republic, which includes most of the student dormitories, classrooms, and laboratories, as well as student cafeterias, cafes, pizzerias, groceries, sport facilities like beach volleyball, football pitch, tennis courts, and much more. The campus has wifi in many public areas, and connected to the city by trams and busses, allowing easy connection to the entire city, country and beyond.
The university is excellent facilities for sport, including clay tennis courts, beach volleyball, full sized football pitch, tennis courts and larger gymnasium with basketball, volleyball, badminton and squash courts. There is an Olympic-sized swimming pool and sauna facilities 5 minutes away from the campus. Adjacent to the campus is a forest used by the entire community for walking, running, biking, picnics, etc.
Technical University of Ostrava has a very active international student’s club, ESN. The club organizes a local “Buddy” for each student, and arranges a wide array of activities. These range from social event, parties and trips to the local mountains, beautiful and historical cities and castles, as well as trips to some of Europe’s finest capitals. ESN also organizes volunteer opportunities at local primary schools and children’s hospitals, giving international students a chance to give back to the community.
TUO is a state university, and all English taught programmes are accredited by the Czech Ministry of Education Youth and Sports. The University holds the European Diploma Supplement Label meaning your diploma will be easily recognized by future employers or universities, and follows the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS), which facilitates the ease of student mobility between universities worldwide.
