The University of Cologne was founded in the year 1388 and thus is one of the oldest universities in Germany. With more than 44,000 enrolled students, it is also currently one of the largest German universities.
Among many others, the graduate schools include the a.r.t.e.s. Graduate School for the Humanities Cologne and the joint Bonn-Cologne Graduate School of Physics and Astronomy.
Five years ago, an advanced quality management system for teaching was implemented. It has brought about remarkable improvements in the quality of teaching and training, study programmes, and student services. These efforts were complemented by funding schemes and reward systems for excellent teaching performance. The rector’s programme "Innovation in Studying and Teaching" has provided 4 million Euros over the last two years for the exploration of innovative and contemporary teaching concepts.
The life and natural sciences are represented by the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, comprising biology, chemistry, geography, geosciences, mathematics and physics. These two Faculties have greatly benefited from long-standing excellent collaborations. Cutting-edge, internationally competitive research is currently being performed in many fields including research on aging-associated diseases, molecular evolutionary biology and plant sciences, quaternary research and statistical physics.
The University´s study programm prepare graduates for excellent career opportunities on the employment market. The Professional Centre renders personal assistance to students in seizing these opportunities: through its Professional & Academic School and the Career Support Centre.Via the job portal "stellenwerk", students an find jobs, traineeship and diploma projekts; graduates, their first positions.
