Tell us a bit about yourself. What is your name? How old are you? Where do you come from?My name is Jamal Hassan, 35 years old from Pakistan.
What is the name of your university, study programme, which discipline? When did you start studying?I started my Ph.D. studies in Geography on November 07, 2016 at University of Dundee, United Kingdom.
What made you choose this programme? How did you decide?Basically, I have a background in earth sciences, so I decided to continue my studies in this field. I am also the lecturer of Geography in Pakistan, therefore, I wanted to get higher education in this field and to continue my career as a lecturer of Geography.
Did you find your study programme on StudyPortals? If so, how then did StudyPortals help you in your decision process?Yes, I did find my programme on StudyPortals and it helped me a lot. I was able to find world top-ranked institutions which offer Doctorate studies in Geography and also studentship in this subject.
What were the main challenges you had to face before being accepted to your university?I applied for Ph.D. in some of the universities available on StudyPortals and I learned about their requirements. Then I assessed my qualifications according to this. It was a big challenge for me to find the most relevant and suitable institutions where I can find my research interests. Finally, the Department of Geography at the University of Dundee was offering the research area which was most suitable for my interests in research.
Did you take a language test (e.g. TOEFL, IELTS) when applying for the programme? If yes, which one did you choose, why and how was your experience with it?
Yes, I did IELTS test before applying for the programme. I think IELTS is the most suitable test in order to get required band for admission in United Kingdom universities.

What are three things you like most about the university? If you could improve anything about the university, what would it be?Firstly, the University of Dundee fulfills my requirements of research interests. Secondly, it is one of the most prestigious institutions in the UK. Thirdly, the admission process is very simple.
What was the biggest surprise in your study adventure? The beauty of city stands in its location by the sea. The weather is fascinating throughout the year.
How would you rate your experience on a scale from zero to ten (0 – It is/was a total disaster, 10 – I have/had the time of my life)? Why?I rate it 10 because it was my prime objective to get higher education from world-renowned university and I achieved my goal by studying here.
What would be your advice for students from your country that consider studying abroad? Is there anything that you would do differently if you could do it over again?I think that the University of Dundee is very suitable for studying abroad because of its prestige and ranking in the world. I also find it suitable because of its leniency in accepting English Language Test with lower band compared to its ranking of other universities in the UK.
