Rasaq is currently pursuing his Ph.D. in Molecular Biology/ Genetics at Monash University, in Australia. We asked him about his experience of studying abroad.
Tell us a bit about yourself. What is your name? How old are you? Where do you come from?I am Rasaq Olajide Akinsola. A Nigerian from the south-western part of the country. I graduated with First Class Honours in Microbiology from Federal University of Technology Minna Niger, State Nigeria. I love reading, writing, and meeting new people.What is the name of your university, study programme, which discipline? When did you start studying?I am currently a Ph.D. student at Monash University Malaysia. I am studying at the Department of Molecular Biology/ Genetics.What made you choose this programme? How did you decide?I love human Genetics and Molecular Biology because it connects another field of life sciences. It was a dream come true that I got a job as a supervisor in that field of study.Did you find your study programme on StudyPortals? If so, how then did StudyPortals help you in your decision process?I didn't find my study program on StudyPortals but it can help other students with the best information that one could need in order to begin his/her journey of studying abroad. What were the main challenges you had to face before being accepted to your university?My goal wasn't to only be accepted but to also get a full scholarship with a stipend. I come from a poor background and I have a burning desire for academics. I always saw myself a researcher and an authority in the field of Molecular Genetic and Monash University provided the right platform.Did you take a language test (e.g. TOEFL, IELTS) when applying for the programme? If yes, which one did you choose, why and how was your experience with it?
I took IELTS and I scored the minimum score of 6.5. It was a nice experience.What are three things you like most about the university? If you could improve anything about the university, what would it be?Monash is a global brand, research oriented. This university is equipped with world-class research facilities and seasoned researchers/ lecturers from various fields.What was the biggest surprise in your study adventure?The nice and fun atmosphere, good network and affordable accommodation.How would you rate your experience on a scale from zero to ten (0 – It is/was a total disaster, 10 – I have/had the time of my life)? Why?Definitely a 10. It’s so interesting and nice and the research facilities are just awesome. What would be your advice for students from your country that consider studying abroad? Is there anything that you would do differently if you could do it over again?I will advise students to check the rankings of the universities. Some universities have really good Science and Technology departments, while some have distinguished Business and Art departments. We also have star rated universities. They don't compromise standard and quality.What are your future plans after graduating?I want to graduate with good research publications and apply for a post-doctorate position.What are three things you like the most about the city?
