The purpose of the study programme is preparation of specialists of highest scientific qualification in the branch of statistical physics, mathematical physics or experimental physics (high-temperature plasma and materials research) who are ready for independent scientific or applied research.

The study programme is aimed at people interested in different physical aspects of the problems of natural and exact sciences. The purpose of the study programme is preparation of specialists of highest scientific qualification in the branch of statistical physics, mathematical physics or experimental physics (high-temperature plasma and materials research) who are ready for independent scientific or applied research.

Why Study Physics at Tallinn Univeristy?

The doctoral study programme of physics pursues the international traditions and aims of organising a doctoral study programme of natural sciences. The study programme was started in 2006 and has been granted full accreditation. The main aim is preparation of doctoral thesis where the criterion of assessment is participation in international research discussion.

Objectives of the Programme

to provide doctoral students with conditions that enable them (1) to acquire broad-based, systematic and profound education in science and exact sciences, and (2) to carry out independent research that meets internationally recognized standards;

to promote the development of the doctoral students into highly-qualified professors, researchers and specialists who provide for sustainable development in the field;

to raise knowledge and skills of the doctoral students to the high professional standards recognized by the international research community.

    PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English Academic) is a language test that enables students to demonstrate their writing, listening, speaking, and reading skills when applying to study in English. Delivered and marked by computer, it reports on a scale between 10 and 90.

Academic Requirements

  • Admission exam (motivational discussion) is based on the plan for the doctoral thesis that is agreed with the prospective supervisor.
  • The plan of doctoral thesis must be presented together with the admission documents or sent in scanned format with the supervisor's signature to the programme coordinator professor tonu.laas@tlu.ee and intloo@tlu.ee.
  • English - B2 level. 
  • For the purposes of identity verification at the admission procedure the Admission Committee has the right to take a screenshot during the oral part of the admission exam carried out via video bridge.
