Overview

The EdS-SPED degree is designed to meet the needs of teachers certified in Special Education who have completed a master's degree in special education. The program consists of a minimum of 27 graduate credit hours, including an Exit Examiniation and Research Project. Students who do not have a master's degree in special education may qualify for entrance to the program through the completion of four 3-credit hour courses.

In this Education - Special Education program from University of West Georgia, candidates will be required to read, write, and research the major topics in Special Education. Candidates enroll in 15 hours of 7000 and 8000 level special education Content Specialization courses, and 12 hours of special education research. Most of the required courses include a designated artifact that is utilized as part of the assessment plan for each candidate.

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 3 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

General Requirements

Admittance Guidelines
  • Complete requirements for a Master's degree in special education from an accredited institution
  • Present a cumulative 3.5 (4.0 scale) grade point average or higher on all graduate work
  • Present a current teaching certificate in special education
  • Document 2 or more years of successful experience as a special education teacher
  • Take part in an interview with program faculty. The interview may take place in person or with the use of technology 
  • Official transcripts from a regionally or nationally accredited institution are required and should be sent directly to the UWG Admissions Office.
