The doctoral training jointly offered by Sciences Po and the IMPRS-SPCE of the Max Planck Institute and University of Cologne allows students pursuing a PhD in sociology or political science to specialize in economic sociology, political economy, and organizational theory. Exchange requirements

To be eligible, candidates must be enrolled in Sciences Po’s doctoral program.  They may spend between two and three semesters in Cologne. This Dual PhD Degree Sciences Po/International Max Planck Research School is offered by Sciences Po.

To earn a joint PhD from the Franco-German program the candidate must enrol for three semesters at the partner institution. Shorter stays are also possible: students are then considered to be exchange students.

The Max Planck Centre/Sciences Po (Maxpo) offers a stipend of 600 euros per month.  The Max Planck Institute in Cologne will host candidates and provide a shared office.  Candidates are responsible for finding housing in Cologne, but the IMPRS-SPCE can provide useful information.

Programme Structure

Through exchange visits and joint seminars participants will benefit from the intellectual resources of both institutions and will have the opportunity to pursue a joint Franco-German PhD.

This programme may require students to demonstrate proficiency in English.

General Requirements

Students in Sciences Po’s sociology or political science doctoral programs who are either in their first thesis year (for a joint program or exchange) or second thesis year (for an exchange) may apply to the joint program.

Application packages must include:

    • a letter in English explaining expectations of the stay
    • a detailed resume in English
    • the proposed thesis and a progress report.

Applications must be electronically submitted by November 30 at the latest to the Doctoral School’s Carine Boutillier.
