About

The DPhil (PhD) in Economics is offered by the International Business SchoolEconomics students at the International Business School undertake supervised but independent research, at the end of which they submit a thesis of not more than 100,000 words embodying the results of that research. This thesis must demonstrate familiarity with, and an understanding of the subject, its principal sources and authorities. It should display critical discrimination and a sense of proportion in evaluating evidence and the judgements of others.

A DPhil thesis must embody an original contribution to the knowledge of economics either by the discovery of new knowledge, or by the exercise of a new and independent critical approach.

Programme Structure

Candidates spend a considerable part of their studies undertaking supervised research, at the end of which they submit a thesis embodying the results of that research. This thesis must demonstrate familiarity with, and an understanding of the subject, its principal sources and authorities. It should display critical discrimination and a sense of proportion in evaluating evidence and the judgements of others. The subject should be dealt with in a competent and scholarly manner.

English Language Requirements

You only need to take one of these language tests:

  • Minimum required score:

    The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00.     The TOEFL – or Test OF English as a Foreign Language – offers a paper-based test (PBT). The final, overall PBT score ranges between 310 and 677, and is based on an average taken from the three test components (listening, structure, and reading). The writing part of this test is scored separately on a scale of 0-6. Read more about TOEFL (PBT).

  • Minimum required score:

    90

    The TOEFL – or Test Of English as a Foreign Language – offers an internet-based test (iBT). The final, overall iBT score ranges between 0 and 120, and includes a scaled average from the four components (reading, listening, speaking, and writing). Read more about TOEFL (iBT).

Academic Requirements

Entry Requirements:

  • First or second class, upper division degree or significant work experience. A Master’s degree is preferred,

  • Sufficient English skills and academic knowledge that the IBS Research Officerchecks with an Orientation Interview via Skype after the online application. The interview is followed by the IBS English language test (you can be exempt from the test with a sufficient score of IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge or Pearson),

  • After a successful Skype interview and English testing student must submit his/her proposal by email. If the proposal is accepted, student will proceed with payment transfer of the first year’s fee and will have a face-to-face consultation on his/her proposal with the Supervisor.
