Overview
Smart Buildings and Cities PDEng program from Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) is a two-year post-master technological designer program. SBC graduates are able to use a broad technological understanding of concepts relevant to the smart cities themes (architecture, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, building engineering, civil engineering and ICT).
PDEng trainees work at their company project and parallel to that they are taking part in different courses provided by TU/e. These courses help them to improve their design skills, professional skills (communication, teamwork, management, entrepreneurship) and their individual disciplinary knowledge related to their project and their background to deepen and broaden their knowledge.
Traineeships are salaried positions. After successfully completing all requirements, trainees are awarded a Professional Doctorate in Engineering (PDEng) degree.
The following focus areas or themes for the Smart Buildings & Cities (SBC) program and its design projects are defined (based on the research areas of TU/e’s Smart Cities program):
- A carbon neutral city – designing of intelligent and energy efficient building components and concepts; renewable energy generation and storage in the built environment; intelligent networks aimed at matching supply and demand.
- A climate proof, healthy and circular city – designing buildings and cities that mitigate the effects of climate change; are based on the principles of circular economy; promote healthy living and to improve quality of life in the built environment.
Career opportunities
A graduate of the post-master designer program SBC will have gained knowledge and skills in the field of smart buildings and cities. He/she is able to approach a problem from a multidisciplinary perspective and come up with an innovative, realistic solution, supported by a solid business plan.
He or she will be able to:
- seek opportunities for new products, coordinate the design and development of these products
- link various industries so as to achieve the required technological integration
- Stimulate or initiate the successful introduction of innovations in the market. A graduate should be able to start a new business, initially with - for example - the support from the Innovation Lab of the Eindhoven University of Technology, or completely by their own efforts.
Programme Structure
The program consists of two main parts running in parallel.
Half of the program consists of post-master level education in the form of generic design projects and courses about design methods, entrepreneurship and professional skills. Furthermore, it includes several technical courses about topics relevant to SBC. This part of the program also offers ample opportunity to develop professional skills.
The other half of the program is dedicated to an individual design project in collaboration with a company. It is the trainees main responsibility to manage and execute the project. Each trainee is supported by a company supervisor and an university supervisor. A business plan for implementation or marketing of the designed product or process is part of the final deliverables.
