Overview

The Ph.d. in Culture Studies from University College offered by the Southeast Norway aims at integrating elements from the humanities and social sciences as cultural analysis, history, art history, anthropology, history of ideas, philosophy, cultural sociology, ethnology, literature, musicology, history of religions, languages and aesthetic creative and artistic subjects.

The programme is based upon a broad concept of culture - that is, cultural studies in our context means that one can study culture as related to values, attitudes, knowledge, behavior, social relationships, meaningful expressions, artifacts, art and aesthetic practice. Culture can be both a process and a result or a product in the form of material objects, services or activities in the community.

Academic Requirements

  • This programme does not recognise GRE® scores.

The GRE® General Test is a widely administered admissions test that measures the skills needed in today's graduate and business school programs worldwide. The GRE® General Test contains three sections - Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing. Three scores are reported: a Verbal Reasoning score on a 130 - 170 score scale in one-point increments, a Quantitative Reasoning score on a 130 - 170 score scale in one-point increments, and an Analytical Writing score on a 0 - 6 score scale in half-point increments.

General Requirements

For admission to a doctoral programme, the applicant must normally have a fiveyear master's degree, see the descriptions in the second cycle of the National Qualifications Framework. The institution may after special consideration approve other equivalent education as a basis for admission.

It is normally required that an applicant have an average grade of B or better.

An application for admission to a PhD programme should normally be submitted within three months after the start of the research project that is intended to lead to the PhD degree. If less than one year of full-time work on the research project remains at the time of application, the applicant may be rejected.
