History, as a discipline, has undergone many changes over the past decades in terms of its approaches, methodology and sources. With this awareness, the Ph.D. Program in History at Istanbul Sehir University offers a curriculum that adopts an interdisciplinary and comparative approach.
Sehir History is confident in its ability to make original contributions to the Turkish historiography with its academic staff boasting a publication and education experience both in the national and international areas.
During your time at Sehir History, you will acquire disciplined habits of research and gain experience in reaching, collecting, classifying, and evaluating historical resources.
You will learn to demonstrate basic proficiency in research methods, ask sensible research questions, pursue answers carefully, and build sensible arguments based on findings from the available primary and secondary sources. The program will thus equip you with the skillset to make your own contribution to the discipline of history and advance onto your future career.
At ŞEHİR History, you will learn how to work with primary and secondary sources and to interpret them critically. You will also gain a thorough understanding of different schools of historical interpretation and experiment with them. Students are encouraged to build coherent arguments and express their thoughts lucidly and coherently. During the course of the program, you will gain experience in giving oral presentations in an educational setting, making use of appropriate audio-visual techniques and possibilities, and will be provided with the skillset you need for a doctoral program in history or humanities and the pursuit of your academic career.

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 3 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).
Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).
The living costs include the total expenses per month, covering accommodation, public transportation, utilities (electricity, internet), books and groceries.
