At Sociology from Institute of Philosophy and Sociology (PAN) the essence of GSSR experience is pursuit of interdisciplinary doctoral studies in which students make their own choice of courses from more than 50 courses offered, students who wish to gain particular expertise in Cross-National Interdisciplinary Studies may follow a marked "route" indicating.


Sociology from Institute of Philosophy and Sociology (PAN) lasts four years – the maximum period for such a programme normally allowed by Polish law (limited additional time is permitted for students interrupting their studies for the various reasons clearly specified in Ministerial regulations). Students spend only two of their four years as doctoral students attending taught courses, devoting the remaining two years entirely to research.

Students at Sociology from Institute of Philosophy and Sociology (PAN) will:

  • conduct studies according to their own choice of courses. 
  • select courses by completing the online registration form by the published deadline. 

Programme Structure

Courses include:

  • Phenomenology of Eros.
  • Phenomenology of surprise, admiration and astonishment.
  • Phenomenology of moral emotions.
  • Existential phenomenology in Poland.
  • Descartes’ First and Late Philosophy.
  • Comparative studies on the beginning of the Early modern thought.

General requirements

  • Any graduate of a Polish or foreign higher education institution with the degree of magisterium or its equivalent may apply to doctoral studies at the Graduate School for Social Research (GSSR). Students who have not yet been awarded the magisterium degree or equivalent may be conditionally accepted to the programme.
  • Academic Curriculum Vitae
  • Letter of Intent (not more than one page)
  • Concise description of your planned research (not more than 1500 words plus bibliography) 
  • 2 Letters of recommendation 
  • Masters thesis (with a summary in English) or a selected academic publication with you as author (with a summary in English)
  • Official transcripts
  • Photocopy of passport (in the case of non-Polish applicants)
  • Confirmation of payment of the application fee (200 PLN or equivalent in USD or EUR). 
  • English language test certificate  
  • Completed application form
