About the program
Our Food Systems program The University of Vermont prepares students to address some of the most challenging problems of contemporary food systems, such as building climate change resilience, reducing waste across the supply chain and exploring equitable distribution and fair labor practices.
Our curriculum is designed to inspire and motivate students through a diversity of research methods, transdisciplinary and systems thinking approaches and forms of community engagement.

General requirements
- GPA of 3.00 or higher
- Completion of the GRE with satisfactory results in the general (aptitude) portion. If you have received a Master's Degree from an accredited institution, you may request to have the GRE waived.
- TOEFL or IELTS exam scores must be submitted if you are an international student.
- Completion of a college-level statistics course. If this information is not clearly listed on a college transcript, you will need to provide additional documentation as evidence that you have fulfilled this requirement.
- A letter of support from a Food Systems Faculty member who agrees to serve as primary advisor during enrollment in the PhD Program.
