The program has a strong placement record for graduates of both the PhD and MA. While many graduates pursue academic careers, the PhD in philosophy can lead to careers in consulting, public policy and research. Students accepted into this highly competitive PhD program will engage with a vibrant philosophical community supplemented with a visiting speaker series and regular research group meetings.

Programme Structure

  • Core Course

Graduate Proseminar, usually taken in the first year.

  • Additional Courses

Topics may include philosophy of science, history of philosophy, metaphysics, ethics, philosophy of language, epistemology, logic and more.

  • Logic

Students must show competence in logic.

  • Candidacy

Students will complete both oral and written candidacy exams.

  • Thesis
Students will be required to submit and defend an original research thesis.

Academic Requirements

You need the following GPA score:

Required score: 3.5

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 3.5 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

General Requirements

  • Applicants hold a four-year undergraduate degree with honours or a major in philosophy; however, applicants with a degree in a related academic field will be considered.
  • Three letters of reference, and a sample of written work, such as a recent essay, written in English. 
  • A minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.50 or higher on a four-point scale over the last 60 units (10 full-course equivalents) and/or the last two years of study in their degree.
