The Ph.D. program in Geological Engineering prepares students for a professional career in basic research or higher education with an emphasis on characterization of, and design of engineering solutions to meet, societal needs and challenges in geologic settings.

About

This includes exploration for and exploitation of natural resources and characterization and remediation of geologic hazards and environmental contamination. The Ph.D. degree is the standard level of preparation for academic careers in geological engineering, and for careers in the private sector and public service that emphasize original research.

Programme Structure

  • Successfully complete three years (six semesters) or more of approved graduate-level course work and dissertation research
  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Pass the Doctoral Qualifying Examination before the end of the second year of the program
  • Complete a dissertation that demonstrates independent research and contributes significantly toward a better understanding of geology, geophysics, or geological engineering
  • Successfully defend the dissertation at a final oral examination

General Requirements

An applicant for admission to The Graduate School must meet the following minimum requirements:
  • An undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0, based on all undergraduate work. If the undergraduate GPA is below 3.0, a GPA will be calculated on the last 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) of the undergraduate work for admission consideration;
  • Meeting the academic department’s admission standards, and receiving a recommendation for admission to their graduate program.
