The Pegaso Regional Doctoral Course of Earth Sciences offered by University of Pisa is the result of the joint initiative of the three Tuscan universities (Florence, Pisa, Siena) and the Tuscany Region in a project aimed at rationalizing the economic resources that support the Doctoral Courses between Universities and the Tuscany Region.


The Doctoral Course of Earth Sciences offered by University of Pisa  does not have a permanent administrative seat (the administrative headquarters rotates between the three Tuscan universities) and the doctoral students can choose any of the three Tuscan universities as their operational headquarters.

The two main Research Institutes dealing with Earth Sciences in Tuscany (the Institute of Geosciences and Georesources of the CNR and the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology) are members of the project network, and the Geologists Foundation of the Tuscany, ENEL Green Power and West System Srl.

Didactic unit of the department of Earth Sciences

The Teaching Unit of the Department of Earth Sciences takes care of the administrative and financial management of the services related to the teaching of the Department. It carries out activities of support to the management, collaborating in the organizational management of the study courses of the Department. 

  • The students of the Regional PhD Course of Earth Sciences come from Italian and foreign universities. 
  • For three years they move within the research structures and Tuscan companies that deal with Earth Sciences and are obliged to spend a long period of their doctorate in foreign research facilities.
  • Every year the student is required to report his research and teaching activities in order to complete the transition to the next year of the Doctoral Course. 
  • The central moment of this phase is the year-end seminars where the student presents, through a report, the state of his research activity.
  • These seminars are held in rotation in the offices of the three Tuscan universities.

Programme Structure

Courses included:

  • Short courses organized by the Doctoral Course (1CFU is obtained with courses lasting between 6 and 8 hours).  
  • Seminar activity recognized by the course (6 1CFU seminars). 
  • Training activities for the use of laboratory instruments (depending on the type of laboratory and the training / education phases). 
  • Master's or PhD courses or other courses attended during the stay abroad (CFU awarded based on the duration of the courses). - Workshops, congress courses, congress excursions of at least 3 days ( 1 CFU). 
  • Advanced English courses certified with 1 CFU final exam every 8 hours (up to a maximum of 3 CFU). 
  • soft skills  offered by one of the associated offices.

This programme may require students to demonstrate proficiency in English.

Academic Requirements

  • The candidate must be in possession of a Master's degree, or an equivalent academic qualification obtained abroad.This diploma will be examined and verified by the examining boards or the PhD Council. The University accepts candidates who obtain their degree by October, 31. The PhD student "Supernumerary" will have obtained a Master's (or equivalent) degree by the enrollment date.
  • Candidates who possess a foreign academic degree equivalent in level, nature, contents and academic rights (access to further courses) to the Italian academic qualification required for admission to a PhD program may provide the consular documents of the academic degree (translation, legalization and declaration of value)
