About

  • A doctoral programme corresponds to 4 years studies and requires in total 240 ECTS.
  • The nominal study load per semester according to the curriculum shall be 30 European credit points (30 ECTS credits). 
  • Full-load study requires that a student accumulate at least 22,5 ECTS credits on a cumulative basis under the individual study plan by the end of each academic year for each semester attended.
  • Students pursuing doctoral studies shall be designated a study load (full or partial) at the end of academic year accreditation.
  • The PhD programme consists of a study courses equivalent to 55-60 ECTS and an independent scientific project, which ends with a public defense of PhD thesis.

Academic Requirements

General Requirements

In order to commence with doctoral studies, the applicant shall have a master´s degree or a comparable education. All applicants must have a good command of English.

The documents required for application are the following:

  • an application
  • a curriculum vitae incl. data on education as well as research and development activities; 
  • an original and a copy of an education certificate and the diploma supplement; 
  • In case an education certificate acquired in a foreign country, TTÜ has the right to request an assessment and recommendation from the Estonian ENIC/NARIC Centre
  • a copy of the passport, an identity card or a residence permit card;
  • a motivation letter in English.

Tuition Fee

  • Tuition fee is waived for all PhD students.
  • All PhD students studying with full-load have the right to receive doctoral allowance paid by the government.

The living costs include the total expenses per month, covering accommodation, public transportation, utilities (electricity, internet), books and groceries.

Estonian Government offers a number of scholarships intended for university students, researchers or lecturers for studying and doing research at Estonian public universities and institutions.
