The PhD in Refining, Petrochemical and Chemical Engineering (EngIQ) involves an unprecedented partnership in Portugal composed of five Portuguese Universities (University of Aveiro, Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra, Faculty of Science and Technology of the New University of Lisbon, Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto and Instituto Superior Técnico).


Key facts

Doctoral plan comprises a PhD course (in the first year), with compulsory and elective curricular units, followed by a research work leading to the elaboration of the doctoral thesis, developed in a business environment and focusing on themes proposed by the companies associated with the program.


In its first year of operation (2009/2010), 11 PhD students were selected to carry out their projects in the companies GALP Energia , CUF , Dow Portugal and Euroresinas (Sonae Indústria) , with accompaniment of senior executives of these companies and university professors. During the academic year 2010/2011, 4 doctoral projects were carried out in the companies GALP Energia , FIMA and CUF , with 13 students enrolled in the advanced training program, and 9 students attending the customized modules. In the 2011/2012 school year the EngIQ program has 5 doctoral projects in the companies GALP Energia , CUFandEuroresinas (Sonae Indústria) , with 11 students attending the advanced training course and 6 students attending customized modules.


This PhD in Refining, Petrochemical and Chemical Engineering (EngIQ) at Instituto Superior Técnico aims to:

  • To train highly qualified professionals, promoting the knowledge of excellence and the human capital of the companies, thus reinforcing their competences.
  • Promote interaction between universities and companies.

  • Holders of an Undergraduate Degree and Master’s Degree may apply for this training doctoral programme by obtaining a pass in an advanced study course, that grants a total of credits between 30 and 60 ECTS, followed by advanced research, development and innovation work, leading to a dissertation (PhD thesis). In all it has a 3 year duration.
