Overview

It is unrealistic to expect, in the near future, a global economy without oil and natural gas resources as key components. We therefore must continue to optimise due diligence around E&P of crude oil and gas operations, especially operational response to oil spill incidents – as oil spills are stochastic in nature. This PhD project addresses a unique research gap in the oil spill research sub-discipline. Key facts:

Empirical evidence shows that oil spill research is skewed towards offshore environments. The dominant controls of oil spill dynamics in the fluvial to marine transition zones (FMTZ) of coastal channels are rarely studied. Yet these zones and their adjoining landscapes often play host to commercial facilities, including oilfields, oil installations and oil vessels/barges, around the world. 

We seek an exceptional candidate who is willing to work with a multidisciplinary team of experts from academia and industry in finding innovative approach for cost-effective operational response to oil spill incidents in FMTZs that can be applied around the world.

Programme Structure

Curriculum:

  • Dedicated Doctoral College and Centre for Research Capability Development deliver high quality professional support for researchers, from PhD to Professor
  • Free training: research career planning, managing your doctorate, research communication skills, research ethics, research impact, research integrity, research methods and research supervision
  • Coventry is a member of the Doctoral Training Alliance (DTA), the largest multi-partner and only nationwide doctoral training initiative of its kind.

English Language Requirements

This programme may require students to demonstrate proficiency in English.

General Requirements

  • A minimum of a 2:1 first degree in a relevant discipline/subject area with a minimum 60% mark in the Project element or equivalent with  a minimum 60% overall module average.
  • Practical knowledge and/or experience in the subject
  • A good knowledge of oil behaviour on / in water, flow description and particle tracking
  • Experimental, modelling or analytical experience in coastal fluid flow, hydraulics and setting-up/use of physical modelling facilities in this area
  • Experience of (or a willingness to quickly learn) about TELEMAC 3D, BlueKenue or any similar software, be it finite volume or finite element
