Overview

The Flow Measurement and Visualisation in Swirling Flows program from Coventry University will involve using flow measurement and visualisation techniques to investigate the effect of swirl on the flow pattern in a sudden expansion. HWA (Hot-Wire Anemometry) and Stereo PIV (particle-image velocimetry) will be used to get insight into the mechanisms governing the flow and to investigate the effect of flow parameters (mass flow rate, geometry, swirl level) on flow uniformity, flow separation and other phenomena characteristic to complex swirling flows.

Key facts:

Such flows are encountered in many applications - e.g. turbomachinery, cooling flows and after treatment systems for turbocharged car engines. Recent trend to use turbochargers on engines results in swirling flow entering the catalyst or filter. The effect of swirl on the flow distribution inside the catalyst is not well understood.
