Overview

A handful of studies have been conducted to find effective concentrations of rubber aggregates to be used in concrete mixes; however, a literature gap exists in the study of a replacement for the coarse aggregates. Programme Structure

The objectives of the project are:

  • To determine the effects of substituting the natural aggregate with rubber aggregate on the concrete properties (density, compressive and tensile splitting strength, elastic modulus)
  • To estimate the optimum amount of rubber aggregates to be used in concrete mixes for civil engineering applications.
  • To employ a sustainable and easy to execute type of pre-treatment and compare its performance against other pre-treatments previously researched
  • To analyse the effect of surface pre-treatment using UV light and Ultrasonic treatments on the mechanical properties of the crumb rubber aggregates.
  • To recommend methods for future research on the rubber aggregate replacement in concrete as a substitute for natural aggregate

Academic Requirements

You need the following GPA score:

Required score: Upper Second Class

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to Upper Second Class on the UK Honour scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on the UK Honour scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

General Requirements

  • A minimum of a 2:1 first degree in a relevant discipline/subject area with a minimum 60% mark in the project element or equivalent with a minimum 60% overall module average. 
  • A minimum of English language proficiency (IELTS overall minimum score of 7.0 with a minimum of 6.5 in each component)
  • Knowledge and/or experience in the subject
  • Candidates must have some experience in experimental work and of working in a laboratory. It is desirable that candidates can evidence their commitment to research in the form of publications of some kind (for example journal or conference papers).
  • Candidates should have some knowledge of statistics and data analysis. In order to contextualise the research.

The living costs include the total expenses per month, covering accommodation, public transportation, utilities (electricity, internet), books and groceries.

Funding

English-resident UK and EU students, or EU students moving to England for a PhD, who are not in receipt of Research Council funding or other direct government funding can apply to borrow up to £25,000 to help cover the cost of their PhD tuition fees.
