Overview
The foundation of doctoral studies consists in writing a dissertation and completing the compulsory and selected elective courses, which correspond to the basic specialisation of the studies of archaeology at the FA USB:
- Archaeology of Prehistory and Early Middle Ages,
- Medieval and Postmedieval Archaeology,
- Environmental Archaeology,
- Archaeological Theory and Method.
In a joint "School of Doctoral Studies in Archaeology" with the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen and the Institute of Archaeology of the Czech Academy of Sciences, Prague, the student also has the option of other courses offered by the respective institutes.
Graduate profile
Graduates will gain skills and knowledge through education in archaeology at a level comparable to doctoral degree programmes of a similar orientation at other domestic and foreign universities. The aim of the Archaeology programme from the University of South Bohemia is to provide a comprehensive education in the field of archaeology so that graduates are capable of independent scientific work in the Czech Republic and abroad.
Graduates are mature and professional researchers able to work in the academic sphere and other professional institutions in the Czech Republic and abroad. They will be able to perform independent scientific work both methodologically and theoretically, lead scientific projects independently and lecture at universities. They will also be equipped with sufficient language skills to work at foreign institutions.
Programme Structure
The basis of doctoral studies is the completion of compulsory courses with an emphasis on independent scientific work, both in the form of dissertation preparation and other activities, especially publications, presentations at international conferences or involvement in the pedagogical activities of the Institute of Archaeology of the Faculty of Arts USB. It is also an obligation to complete a study stay of at least 1 month at a foreign university or other scientific workplace, or to participate in a foreign research project.
An integral part of the study plan is the completion of compulsory elective courses of thematic focus. Within their framework, each student is obliged to complete 3 basic methodological courses out of a total of 4 offered (block A), covering the basic specializations of archaeology studies at the Faculty of Archaeology - prehistory, medieval, theoretical and environmental archaeology. In each course, the emphasis is on teaching the latest methodological trends of a given chronological or thematic area. Another obligation is to take an exam in two world languages from the faculty-wide offer (block C). Students will then choose at least two other courses, provided by the University of South Bohemia, as well as partners from the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen and the Institute of Archaeology of the CAS in Prague, which will complement their education within the given specialization (Block B).
