Overview
Key Facts of the Applied Physics at the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e)
All three of these aspects are strongly influenced by the unique industrial ecosystem that TU/e is surrounded by, which has a high demand for both the human capital and the research output produced by the department.
Education and research are inextricably linked in our department and the extensive research track record of our staff (memberships of the KNAW and the Young Academy, Spinoza laureates, prize recipients of professional organizations like AVS and APS, editorships of most of the prominent journals in physics, etc.) sustains the quality of the physics foundation we can offer to our students.
In addition, the close relationship between our staff and the surrounding industrial ecosystem (ASML, Philips, VDL, Prodrive Technologies, Thermo Fisher Scientific, TNO) provides us with adequate knowledge of the needs of the future employers of our students. The citation rates of our joint publications with the ecosystem are even higher than the excellent field-average citation rate of the staff within our department.
Scientific career
After a PhD, many scientists opt for a postdoctoral period, often in another country or at another university, mostly for several years. It is an opportunity to broaden and deepen your research skills, contribute to the research field, and build up a track record. TU/e also offers (international) postdoctoral researchers the opportunity to enhance their research experience.
After your postdoctoral experience, you can apply for a Development Track as an Assistant Professor. TU/e encourages talented scientists to develop into assistant and associate professors. Successful associate professors can eventually take the step to a professors' position.

Other requirements
General requirements
- The most important admission criteria are your scientific qualities: you must be familiar with the theory and methodology of your field of study. In addition, an education requirement applies.
- You must have a Dutch master's degree (old-style doctoral degree) or a foreign equivalent.
- Not every foreign preparatory and/or master's program automatically gives you access to a Dutch PhD track. This will be assessed per candidate.
- Since English is the working language in science, we expect a C1 level from our PhD candidates. Please read the job description(s) carefully for any additional requirements.
