Overview
Electrical Engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) aims to be a research-driven and design-oriented world-class institute by having education, research and valorization reinforce each other. Activities share an application-oriented character, a high degree of complexity and a large synergy between multiple facets of the field.
The mission of our Electrical Engineering department is captured in the three mission phrases we formulated 15 years ago. We work towards:
- a ‘Smart Sustainable Society’,
- a ‘Connected World’, and
- a healthy humanity (‘Care & Cure’).
These goals are strongly connected to the much more elaborate Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations.
The department positions itself as a strong partner for interdisciplinary applied research and design within the Brainport region around Eindhoven, and as a globally oriented organization for Electrical Engineering research and education in its full breadth.
Scientific career
After a PhD, many scientists opt for a postdoctoral period, often in another country or at another university, mostly for several years. It is an opportunity to broaden and deepen your research skills, contribute to the research field, and build up a track record. TU/e also offers (international) postdoctoral researchers the opportunity to enhance their research experience.
After your postdoctoral experience, you can apply for a Development Track as an Assistant Professor. TU/e encourages talented scientists to develop into assistant and associate professors. Successful associate professors can eventually take the step to a professors' position.

Other requirements
General requirements
- The most important admission criteria are your scientific qualities: you must be familiar with the theory and methodology of your field of study. In addition, an education requirement applies.
- You must have a Dutch master's degree (old-style doctoral degree) or a foreign equivalent.
- Not every foreign preparatory and/or master's program automatically gives you access to a Dutch PhD track. This will be assessed per candidate.
- Since English is the working language in science, we expect a C1 level from our PhD candidates. Please read the job description(s) carefully for any additional requirements.
