The Earth and Environmental Sciences programmeis free of charge irrespective of country of origin. Each doctoral student receives a monthly scholarship to cover the costs of living.


The subject of a prospective doctoral dissertation may be related to the following research areas:

  • geology
  • geomorphology
  • sedimentology
  • hydrology
  • climatology
  • geoecology
  • geoarcheology
  • environmental Protection
  • environmental geochemistry

Programme Structure

The doctoral training at the Pedagogical University of Krakow consists of: 

1) The Study Program (available here:, which includes

a) courses in general academic skills 

b) research methodology courses

c) specialist courses or workshops

d) elective intedisciplinary courses.

Courses are taught mostly in English. If a course is not taught in English, international doctoral students receive individual instructions and tutoring. 

Additionally, doctoral students participate in conferences and academic exchanges, publish articles, practice teaching, practice research skills at other universities in Poland and abroad.

2) The individual research plan is prepared by the doctoral student in cooperation with their supervisor(s) and implemented over the course of studies, with end-of-semester reports. The research plan leads to the submission of a doctoral dissertation. 


Each instructor must prove significant experience in the subject they teach, as well as an international research dossier in the discipline. 

PhD supervisors are appointed strictly on the basis of their research competence and experience in the area of the doctoral student’s project. Where justified, a second supervisor may be appointed from another Polish or foreign university.

General requirements

1) The MA or equivalent degree gives you the right to pursue doctoral training in a doctoral school in Poland if it fulfils at least one of the following criteria:

  • it gives access to doctoral studies or gives right to start doctoral proceedings in the country where it was obtained;
  • it confirms completion of a joint programme provided by foreign higher education institutions and gives access to doctoral studies or gives right to start doctoral proceedings in at least one of the country in the education of which it was provided is recognized on the basis of an international agreement.

2) An academic degree (MA) awarded by an authorized institution operating in the education system of one of the EU, EFTA, OECD countries is recognized as equivalent to the appropriate Polish one. It may also be recognized on the basis of an international agreement or, if there is no such agreement, by way of nostrification.

The programme is free of charge irrespective of country of origin. Each student receives a monthly scholarship (min 450 EUR) to cover the costs of living.

Living costs

The living costs include the total expenses per month, covering accommodation, public transportation, utilities (electricity, internet), books and groceries.


On top of the monthly subsistence scholarship, doctoral students can benefit from:

1) The Doctoral School's research fund (conferences, materials, publications, research stays). 

2) Echange programs, including ERASMUS +.

3) External grant programs, including those offered by Poland's governement agencies (NCN, NAWA).
