About

The architectural composition and technology favour the interpretation of projects as a means to explore the interplay between different theories, technical innovations and changes in urban environment. The Architecture - History and Project programme is offered by Politecnico di Torino.

This Architecture - History and Project programme from Politecnico di Torino investigates the complexity of architectural cultures, focusing on the close interweaving of history and project, defined by Roberto Gabetti in 1983 as the main feature characterising Turin school and to which refer two important cultural traditions of doctoral academic and research activities, engaged in a mutual dialogue from over twenty years.

On the other hand, historical disciplines, focusing on architecture and city planning, provide a broader view on urban and architectural environments, far from a narrow perspective, thanks to the cooperation with other type of histories (related to economics, social sciences and arts), mapping out a career path devised not only for architects and planners, but also for scholars of humanities.

While maintaining the specific features characterising each curriculum, those two programmes share the interpretation that construction of urban and local territory is the result of a complex process of space and time stratifications.

Another key point comprised in both curricula is the promotion of internationalization of III-level PhD programmes, to be based on the large network of scientific projects carried out by members of Academic Board, playing a fundamental role in the definition of new strategies in both architectural and urban fields and in undertaking professional endeavours they may pose.

Career

This PhD programme offers various career opportunities, not only in the field of academic research but also in national and international contexts in which highly-qualified professionals are more than likely to be employed.

In the first curricula, PhD candidates will acquire the necessary skills to work as a researcher in Universities and research institutes, both public and private, national and international, focusing on history of architecture and city planning, architectural projects, technologies and techniques, working in the field of abstract sciences or of those applied to technological incubators and innovation.

Therefore, PhD graduates may envisage a career both as researchers and professors or  managers in national or international public Institutions, who are responsible for architectural quality, promotion of historical heritage, planning of transformations of urban and local territory and possess the required competences to manage cultural events and projects development.

Research Proposal

The Ph.D. programme in “Architecture. History and Project” (DASP) addresses mono- and inter-disciplinary research on the intertwining of history and project of architecture, city and anthropic space at large.

To that end, DASP particularly welcomes proposals for doctoral theses that explore the relationships between the two core disciplines of the programme – i.e. history and design – in case-based, methodological or foundational terms. Research in architectural technology is also bound to DASP scholarship: technological innovation as cause and effect of significant turns in contemporary design strategies is indeed the core interest of some among the Ph.D. supervisors, research centres and labs affiliated to the DASP community.

Ph.D. research proposals that DASP addresses in the historical field include but are not limited to: architecture and city history in the Early Modern period (17th-18th century); architecture and city history from the 18th century to the late 20th century; history of construction; urban history; history of architectural historiography.

In the fields of architectural design and technology, Ph.D. research proposals are welcome in any of the following fields: the process of design and transformation of human-made landscapes; the process of architectural design and project technique; IT applications in architecture, representation and communication of architecture; architectural theory.
