A doctorate student should pass five examinations (30 ECTS), during the first two years of study. Study module Methodology of scientific work (6 ECTS) and modules of date management and statistical analysis (Biostatistics, Geostatistics or Ecoinformatics depending on the research subject, 6 ECTS) are required for all students. Remaining study modules (18 ECTS) should be chosen according to the research subject and approved by scientific supervisor

About

The main part of the study program is an independent research project which results in the doctoral thesis.

At least two peer-reviewed research papers should be published (accepted for publication) in international scientific journals before the defence of the doctoral thesis.

Quality of studies: doctoral studies are conducted by the leading marine research institution in Lithuania Coastal Research and Planning Institute CORPI of Klaipeda University. International standards set by the EU's ERASMUS MUNDUS joint doctoral program of the “Marine Ecosystem Health and Conservation” are complied during the studies. CORPI participate in this program with the Universities of Ghent (Belgium), Bremen (Germany), Plymouth (United UK), Bologna (Italy) and others as well as leading marine science centers.

Research subject: the main focus of doctoral studies is on interdisciplinary research of the natural and anthropogenic processes in marine and transitional waters using physical, chemical, geological and biological research methods. Out of this, themes of doctoral dissertations cover the wide range of disciplines:

  • marine biogeochemistry, geophysics, geology,
  • marine biology and ecology,
  • environmental impact assessment in the coastal zone,
  • integrated coastal zone management,
  • numerical methods in marine environmental research.
