About

The Socio-economic contestation turned into democratic conflicts. EU comprehensive trade agreements in front of parliaments - the CE program from GEM Stones is in the fields of International and Comparative Law and European Studies.

Overview

The Socio-economic contestation turned into democratic conflicts. EU comprehensive trade agreements in front of parliaments - the CE program from GEM Stones will focus on parliamentary contestation. This IRP will scrutinise how contestation can affect the EU's ability to conclude comprehensive trade agreements.

It will focus on the socio-economic and intersectional concerns raised during the European and Canadian democratic processes involved in the ratification, entry into force and implementation of the EU-Canada Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA). The Researcher will assess how differences in the understanding of liberal democracy between the EU and Canada, between EU MS and within several EU MS paved the way to democratic conflicts within the parliaments and the legal systems involved.

Career

The researcher should be in the first four years of their research careers at the time of recruitment and have not been awarded a doctoral degree so far.

Programme Structure

GEM-DIAMOND’s overall research program will collectively tackle three shared knowledge gaps regarding contemporary strains on liberal democracy:
  • Objective 1: Conceptualising the seemingly mounting dissensus surrounding liberal democracy.
  • Objective 2: Unpacking the ambiguous role different actors can play as both champions and challengers of liberal democratic norms, values and practices.
  • Objective 3: Assessing the impact of increased dissensus regarding liberal democracy on the policy instruments of the EU and its capacity to act in its internal and external policies.
