Overview
The Doctoral Programme in Theology offers subject-specific, interdisciplinary and methodological courses as well as opportunities to engage with scholars in all three faculties across Switzerland. All courses are open to doctoral students at the Faculties of Theology of the Universities of Bern, Basel and Zurich.
A doctorate in a doctoral programme consists of conducting and publishing independent research (in a doctoral thesis), required coursework, and an oral defense of the doctoral thesis.
Programme structure
The required coursework comprises a total of 30 ECTS points. Courses offered by the Doctoral Programme can be chosen as coursework. Details about the coursework are set down in the Doctoral Agreement. The content of the coursework depends on research requirements and has to comprise at least 10 ECTS points for coursework related to the subject or topic of the doctoral work, and at least 10 ECTS points for coursework on more comprehensive topics.
Programme Structure
- In the joint program various courses and seminars are offered, awarding ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) points, which are required in the PhD regulations at each Faculty. The offerings aim at deepening specialized, interdisciplinary, methodological and technical competence.
- While degrees continue to be conferred by the individual Faculties, the Faculties strive for unity in graduation requirements. A committee formed from members of the three participating universities gives informal direction to and coordinates the doctoral program. The Faculties are responsible for policy implementation and for oversight of individual doctoral candidates at the respective institutes.
