The Turkish Literature programme from Bilkent University is designed to encompass all periods and genres of Turkish literature. Present fields of concentration are: classical literature, literary modernization and contemporary literature.

About

Aiming at enhancing the standards of Turkish literary studies, the Turkish Literature programme from Bilkent University requires theoretical, interdisciplinary and comparative approaches, as well as proficiency in several languages.

Doctoral students must complete course work of at least 21 credit hours with a minimum GPA of 3.00 and fulfill all language requirements before they present their written dissertation proposals and take the comprehensive written and oral exams. 

The research proposal for the dissertation must be approved by the Department before the candidates may take the comprehensive exams. These exams are designed to evaluate the candidate's expertise in his/her area of concentration and research proposal for the dissertation. The candidate is eligible to take the orals after passing the written exam. 

Following the successful completion of these requirements, candidates will conduct research and proceed with the writing of their dissertation, which should embody original research and make a substantial contribution to Turkish literary scholarship. Candidates must successfully defend their dissertation before a committee of the faculty.

Academic Requirements

  • This programme accepts GRE® scores. However, it does not provide a recommended score range.

    The GRE® General Test is a widely administered admissions test that measures the skills needed in today's graduate and business school programs worldwide. The GRE® General Test contains three sections - Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing. Three scores are reported: a Verbal Reasoning score on a 130 - 170 score scale in one-point increments, a Quantitative Reasoning score on a 130 - 170 score scale in one-point increments, and an Analytical Writing score on a 0 - 6 score scale in half-point increments.

  • Applicants to the program are required to hold an M.A. degree in Turkish Literature or related fields from Bilkent or other universities. 
  • To be admitted to the program, applicants from other universities may be required to take written and/or oral exams.

Scholarships for International Students
  • Prospective students who apply for financial assistance are evaluated according to their high school grades, their national and/or international exam scores, their program choices, and other relevant academic criteria.
  • Qualified applicants are offered partial or full tuition waiver scholarships. Tuition waiver scholarships are awarded at five levels, ranging from 20% to 100% in increments of 20%. Accommodation scholarships may be available for a limited number of top students who are on full tuition waiver scholarship.
