Overview
The BSN-DNP Doctor of Nursing Practice program at California State University Long Beach prepares graduates for evidence-based inquiry, leadership, health policy and advocacy, and development of high-level competencies and skills in five nurse practitioner clinical specialty areas.
Outcomes
Upon completion of the BSN-DNP hybrid program, graduates will demonstrate the following competencies:
- Integrate nursing science and the nursing process with concepts and principles from biopsychosocial, physical, ethical, analytical, and organizational sciences in implementing the highest level of evidence-based nursing practice.
- Utilize organizational and Systems Leadership thinking in developing and evaluating care delivery approaches that meet current and future needs of patient populations by employing sound business, finance, economics and health policy, and ethical principles and strategies to implement quality, cost-effective, patient care delivery systems.
- Analyze methods for evidence-based practice in the following areas: Appraising current best practices, evaluating outcome of practice and practice patterns, and quality improvement methodologies to promote safe, efficient, and equitable care, and use research methods appropriate for investigating problems related to patient care.
- Design programs that evaluate and monitor outcomes of care, care systems, and quality improvement including consumer use of health care information system.
- Critically analyze health policy proposals, health policies, and related issues from the perspective of consumers, nursing, other health professions, and other stakeholders in policy and public forums, and assume leadership in the development and implementation of institutional, local, state, and federal health policies that are equitable, just, and ethical in all health care arenas.
- Synthesize epidemiological, biostatistical, environmental, psychosocial data related to individuals, aggregate, and populations in developing, implementing, and evaluating interventions to address health promotion/disease prevention efforts, improvement of health status, and addressing of gaps in the care of individual, aggregates and or populations.
- Exhibit advanced levels of clinical judgment, systems thinking, and accountability in designing, delivering, and evaluating evidence-based care in complex situations dealing with individual patients, groups and/or populations to improve their health care outcomes.
- Assume faculty roles at the community colleges and universities, and be able to design, implement and evaluate educational nursing programs.

General requirements
- A Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from a nationally accredited program with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
- Hold an active, unencumbered, unrestricted current RN license in California
- A college-level course in Statistics
- Three letters of professional reference from faculty, colleagues, or supervisors; should be within the past year, dated, and signed.
- An official copy of all transcripts from all universities/colleges previously attended.
- Submit a statement of purpose for obtaining the BSN-DNP degree/NP Specialty Certificate (no more than 1 page single spaced)
- Applicants will be required to complete an interview / write an on-site or monitored online essay assessment
- Verification of current employment as a Registered Nurse; letter can come from your direct supervisor at your agency.
- Have one year of clinical experience as a Registered Nurse
