Overview

About the program

Based on the investigation of mathematical structures that arise in quantum physics and applications in quantum field theory, the training group studies also purely mathematical questions concerning these structures in areas such as noncommutative geometry, analysis and representation theory, topology and algebraic geometry. This Mathematical Structures in Modern Quantum Physics program is offered at the University of Göttingen.

Programme Structure

Research areas:

One focus of our RTG are topological and geometric notions related to quantum field theory and string theory.
This includes Calabi–Yau varieties and twisted K-theory; invariants of von Neumann algebras and their inclusions; non-commutative geometry; and coarse geometry.
Another focus is the construction of quantum field theories, both perturbatively and non-perturbatively, and the study of their physical properties.
This requires various mathematical tools, mostly from harmonic analysis, micro-local analysis, and the theory of von Neumann algebras. The study of hyperbolic differential equations and their singularities is a prerequisite to construct quantum fields propagating on singular spacetimes.

A university degree is a general prerequisite to qualify for admission to doctoral studies. Usually, a final grade point average of at least 2.5 on the German grading scale (which equals good or B+) or an examination graded "cum laude" is required.
If you earned your degree abroad, the PhD Commission of the faculty will decide on its recognition.
