Overview
The doctoral programme produces Doctors of Science in Technology (D.Sc. (Tech), Doctors of Science in Business Administration (D.Sc. (Econ) and Doctors of Science Philosophy (PhD). The goal of the Technical Sciences doctoral programme at the University of Vaasa is to train high calibre experts capable of independent research work to serve industries, the economic life, the world of academia and other organisations.
Education
In the field of technical sciences, graduates include Doctors of Science in Technology (D.Sc. (Tech.)) or Licentiates of Science in Technology, Doctors of Science in Economics and Business Administration (D.Sc. (Econ.)) or Licentiates of Science in Economics and Business Administration as well as Doctors of Philosophy (PhD).
Doctoral degrees in the field of technical sciences may be obtained in the following fields of research (major subject): automation technology, energy engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, telecommunication engineering and industrial management.
Doctoral degrees in the field of business studies may be obtained in the following fields of research (major subject): information systems science, industrial management, statistics and business mathematics.
In addition, the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) can also be obtained in other subjects (such as mathematics, statistics and business mathematics), if the student is eligible for doctoral studies in the major subject in question and can be offered expert and sufficient supervision. At the same time as when the student is granted the right to study for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, it is established whether the degree will be completed according to the degree structure of technical sciences or business studies.

General requirements
Eligible for studies leading to an academic doctorate degree shall be a person who has completed
- an applicable higher university degree;
- an applicable higher polytechnic degree; or
- an applicable education completed abroad which in the awarding country gives eligibility for corresponding higher education.
The following documents must be enclosed in the application for doctoral studies:
- Officially certified copies of Degree certificates
- Transcript of Records of the previous degrees and explanation of the grading scale
- Photocopy of passport's information page
- Proof of language proficiency
- Curriculum Vitae. Please use the Europass CV form
- Preliminary research plan. The research topic of the doctoral thesis is presented in the research plan.
- Preliminary study plan of the doctoral studies.
- Motivation letter for doctoral studies.
