Overview

The MA by Research programme requires you to prepare a thesis of up to 40,000 words. In contrast the PhD, the most advanced research degree, leads to a thesis of up to 80,000 words. Both programmes will be supported by expert academic supervision.

You can study Translation Studies from University of Birmingham on campus or by distance learning. Please note that if you are studying with us by distance learning, the programme includes a fully-funded annual visit to campus for each full year of your programme (every two years for part-time students).

Programme Structure

Research strengths include: literary translation and reception; translation history; translation stylistics; corpus-based translation studies; translation and language change; adaptation; gender issues in translation; news translation; collaborative and self-translation; intercultural pragmatics; interpreting studies.

Academic Requirements

You need the following GPA score:

Required score: Upper Second Class

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to Upper Second Class on the UK Honour scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on the UK Honour scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

General Requirements

  • For MRes and MA by Research programmes, entry to our programmes usually requires a good (normally a 2:1 or above) Honours degree, or an equivalent qualification if you were educated outside the UK.
  • Applicants for a PhD will also need to hold a Masters qualification at Merit level or above (or its international equivalent).
