Overview

New rules, coming out the "Bologna Declaration", leading to better compatibility and comparability of the European University degrees, as well as EU students mobility, presented a new challenge for creating Doctoral (PhD) Programs in Informatics.

Informatics Engineering is seen as a broad Body of Knowledge encompassing several aspects of Computing Engineering, Information Systems and Computer Science contributing to the Conceptualization, Specification, Implementation, Validation, Maintenance and Integration of Computer-based Systems.

ProDEI Organization:

  • Classes corresponding to 60 Credit Units (ECTS-European Credit Transfer System). Typically one Year
  • Research work corresponding to 120 ECTS. Typically longer than two years.

Equivalence of ECTS: Candidates holding a Master can apply for some Credits equivalence, according to their CV. However, the upper limit is 30 ECTS.

Final Application: Only after students have achieved 60 ECTS corresponding to classes, plus an approved Work Plan Report.

Supervision: A professor from the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto has to be either responsible or co-responsible for the supervision. An Advisory Group will be in charge for monitoring the student's work. This Group includes at least one external expert.

Accreditation

The Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education (A3ES) at the Administration Council meeting of 2014/06/20, decided to accredit the study programme PRODEI, in accordance to the External Assessment Team recommendation.
