Overview

SEED program aims to meet industry current needs, where early product prototyping and development is now entirely carried out through numerical modelling, prior to physical experimentation of a few selected designs. 

The complexities of such models require new computational approaches, which are the main focus of SEED research activities. As a result, SEED candidates aim to cover important areas in engineering such as biomedical engineering, civil engineering, aerospace engineering, or environmental engineering.

Students will be also taught to develop core entrepreneurial skills to successfully move ideas into commercial practice through a series of transversal entrepreneurship modules, as part of their training. Doctoral students will be immersed in an innovation environment through interaction with newly established R&D spin-offs hosted within specialist incubator units.

The specific objectives of the programme are to train doctoral students with the ability to:

  • Develop new tailor-made simulation-based engineering capabilities.
  • Develop new computational models of physical and/or biological systems based upon cutting-edge research fields (i.e. quantum mechanics, multi-scale modelling, biomechanics, computational nanotechnology).
  • Develop new and sophisticated algorithms specifically designed to be extremely efficient for emerging computer architecture platforms (i.e. GPU computing, massive parallelised environments).
  • Facilitate/promote the technology transfer between research developed in Academia and Industry.
  • Identify and exploit technology-based business opportunities, in order to obtain leadership positions in knowledge-based industries or start and operate technology ventures.
  • Develop cutting-edge research in simulation-based engineering by incorporating complementary research expertise from eight leading European HEIs and their industrial partners. This will allow students to experience Postgraduate education in more than one European institution with the consequent cultural enrichment.

  • References to research projects completed and publications.
