The specific goals of DocMASE and the concrete actions with which it is intended to realise them are:

To improve skills (consequently career perspectives) of doctoral candidates in the following aspects:

  • Technical competences are improved through a stimulating research training environment,
  • provided by high-quality research facilities available at the partner universities and research centres -which are among the most excellent in Europe - and also through training and research in innovative and challenging thematic fields at the forefront of science.
  • Intercultural skills are acquired by specific training blocks and language courses and experienced during compulsory mobility within Europe but also to third country associated partners.
  • Complementary skills like social competences or entrepreneurship are improved by the universities as well as by the industrial partners.
  • Preparation of doctoral candidates for life-long learning in a changing environment and new work systems; particularly through trans-national and intersectorial mobility.
To enhance networking activities within the EU and with third countries in the field of research and education; promoting the involvement of international students as contact persons and multipliers. To become a reference at European level in order to attract talented young researchers to Europe while at the same time avoiding “brain drain” by encouraging them to consolidate contacts with their home countries.

To enhance intersectorial cooperation by involving industrial partners in the doctoral programme, improving the technology transfer between universities and research centres and also enhancing employability of doctoral students in industry.

Programme Structure

The innovation strength of technology-oriented disciplines is strongly dependent on the performance and availability of materials. Materials innovations have the potential to make feasible innovative product ideas, to reduce the impact on the environment, to save energy, to use scarce resources more efficiently, or to make mobility safer. Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) is a vastly multidisciplinary field that provides a bridge between chemical and physical sciences and engineering disciplines like mechanics, electrical engineering or electronics. Moreover, biology, pharmacy and medicine are also related with materials science, for instance in the area of tissue engineering or implants. However, such different approaches often do not merge easily together for an innovative breakthrough.
