University rank #8 (ARWU) , NY,
This program serves as the parent program for students who do not wish to select a particular track, thereby giving them more options in possible research mentors.

The Integrated Program in Cellular, Molecular and Biomedical Studies (CMBS) is an umbrella program that presents students with a unique opportunity to obtain individualized training in all aspects of biomedical sciences, including basic cell and molecular biology, microbiology, structural biology, biophysics, genetics, immunology, neurobiology, systems and computational biology, as well as translational biomedical disease-related research. The CMBS program is an accredited degree-granting program that was first established in 1986 to provide interdisciplinary coursework and bridge the basic sciences at Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC). The underlying rationale for this program was to provide graduate students with a thorough grounding in the basics of biochemistry, genetics, cell and molecular biology through a series of 'core courses.'

Molecular Genetics

  • The course covers aspects of molecular biology and genetics from prokaryotes to mammals; regulation of gene expression, molecular genetics of bacterial viruses, plasmids and transposable elements, as well as modern molecular genetic approaches to complex biological phenomena.

Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology

  • The first semester course covers basic biochemical and experimental principles, such as protein and nucleic acid structure and chemistry, thermodynamics and enzyme kinetics, and bioinformatics.

Statisics for the Basic Sciences

  • This spring semester course provides an introduction to the basic statistics commonly used in biomedical research laboratories.

Responsible Conduct of Research and Related Policy Issues

  • This spring semester course explores a variety of ethical and policy issues that arise during the conduct of basic and clinical scientific research.

English Language Requirements

You only need to take one of these language tests:

  • Minimum required score:

The TOEFL iBT ® measures your English-language abilities in an academic setting. The test has four sections (reading, listening, speaking, and writing), each with a score range of 0-30, for a total score range of 0-120.

  • Minimum required score:

The TOEFL®PBT is administered in a paper format and measures your ability to use and understand English in a classroom setting at the college or university level. It accurately measures how well you can listen, read and write in English while performing academic tasks.

  • Minimum required score:

The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00. The minimum IELTS score requirement refers to which Overall Band Score you received, which is your combined average score. Read more about IELTS.

Academic Requirements

  • Only candidates for the Ph.D. degree will be admitted.
  • One full year each of general chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, physics, biology, and calculus. Admission may be granted in exceptional cases to applicants who have not fulfilled all of these requirements. In such cases, the deficiencies are remedied after admission by adding appropriate courses to the curriculum.
  • The General Graduate Record Examination is required. One subject test in either biochemistry, biology, cell and molecular biology, chemistry, physics, or mathematics is recommended.
