The IGS North-South is a graduate school of the Universities of Bern, Basel, and Zurich in Switzerland. It is dedicated to establishing a leading international research network that analyses the impacts of global change, with a view to advancing sustainable development worldwide. It emphasizes an integrative, partnership-based research approach encompassing higher education at the PhD level, innovation, and application. The IGS North-South is currently training over 80 students from eight regions in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Europe.
The IGS North-South offers their students a Certificate of Specialization in Sustainable Development which supplements the degree they receive from their home institution and other Graduate Schools.The IGS North-South organizes and carries out international disciplinary, interdisciplinary, and transdisciplinary courses at doctoral level for PhD candidates who have already started their career.
The International Graduate School (IGS) North-South offers courses within three different modules as shown in the overview of course types:
To receive the Certificate "of Specialization in Sustainable Development", PhD candidates must collect a minimum of 12 ECTS credits. Please check this site to learn more about coursework requirements.
This programme may require students to demonstrate proficiency in English.
To gain admission, the PhD applicant must be accepted by an eligible professor and enrolled at one of the participating universities in Switzerland or at an accredited external research institution partnering with the IGS North-South. PhD candidates can join the IGS North-South as
a. full members, collecting a minimum of 12 credit Points in courses offered by IGS North-South partner institutions.
b. associate members, who are not doing their doctoral studies at a partner institution of the IGS North-South and only participate in individual courses offered by the IGS North-South.
There is no application fee or tuition. The IGS North-South membership is free of charge.
The living costs include the total expenses per month, covering accommodation, public transportation, utilities (electricity, internet), books and groceries.
