History
In 1990, a core group of funders including the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, USAID and the Pew Charitable Trusts had agreed to support a doctoral program at Charles University provided it served not only Czechoslovakia, but the entire transition region. Implementation took an additional year.

Housing services
CERGE-EI students may apply for accommodation in the Charles University dormitories, which are generally located in the suburbs (about 45 minutes from CERGE-EI by public transport). Cost is approximately CZK 3,000 per month for a bed in a double room.
Library services
Established in 1992, the Jan Kmenta CERGE-EI Library has grown into a rich resource of modern economics literature, housing an extensive international collection of books, journals and databases. Today it is considered the best library of its kind in Central and Eastern Europe and, as such, is an important center for library services in Economics.
