MSU was founded in 1893 as the Agricultural College of the State of Montana. It opened on February 16 with five male and three female students. The university football team was established in 1897, and the college graduated its first four students that same year. The curriculum expanded into civil and electrical engineering in 1898.

MSU is recognized nationally for its prominence in research among leading public research universities. Research expenditures at MSU typically exceed $100 million annually and top research departments include immunology, chemistry and biochemistry, transportation, physics, and land resources and environmental sciences; while much of the research funding from the National Institutes of Health, Departments of Energy, Defense and Agriculture, and private sources. MSU research has led to significant discoveries that are changing the world. MSU holds more than 250 active technology licenses. In addition, 91 patents and 36 plant variety certificates have been issued for MSU discoveries with many more pending.

You’ll find our career-planning model allows for you to begin working on this process as a freshman and will lead you through several stages before you begin interviewing for positions and negotiating salary.
Launched in 2011 the Allen Yarnell Center for Student Success comprised of the Office of Student Success, Career, Internship & Student Employment Services and the Office of Financial Education.
The over-arching goal of the Center is to advance student retention and graduation outcomes by providing access, resources, solutions, and expertise to promote student success through career maturity, learning support, engagement and financial acumen.

Family & Graduate Housing serves the students of Montana State University by providing affordable housing options in an environment that is conducive to the academic and social success of student families, and qualifying single tenants. Swingle Student Health Service provides outpatient medical care for students and their spouses. We are accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care, and are committed to meeting the highest and most current health standards. Services are provided by experienced physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, registered nurses and other health care professionals.
One of MSU's greatest assets is its location. Simply walking around our beautiful campus gives you ample views of five different mountain ranges and a lifetime of exploration. Bozeman is known as one of the top towns for outdoor recreation and high quality of life in the country. When you fly in over the Bridger Range or drive into the valley and find yourself surrounded by mountains, it's easy to understand why people want to live, work and play here. Add the cultural amenities of a local symphony and ballet, the vibrancy of a college community, and an energetic downtown-Bozeman is the complete package.
Our most notable facility is the Bobcat Stadium, home of the MSU Bobcats college football team which seats 17,777 people. Brick Breeden Fieldhouse is a 7,250.-seat arena that is the home of the men's and women's basketball teams, indoor track and field teams, and frequently hosts concerts and rodeo events. The Marga Hosaues Fitness Center includes a training room, indoor pool, running track, and tennis courts, as well as a 7-meter bouldering wall, group classes, personal fitness, and much more. MSU also has an Outdoor Recreation Program which provides the university community with opportunities for adventure, discovery, personal growth and engagement via human-powered outdoor adventure pursuits.
Montana State University has over 250 student run clubs and organizations and almost $170,000 in funds raised from various sources available for the 2016-2017 school year.
The Office of Student Engagement (OSE) provides and facilitates student engagement opportunities for MSU students through a variety of programs, events, services, and activities. We are THE HUB for students interested in connecting with their fellow Bobcats through student government, student organizations, programs and events, and engaging in service to the community.
MSU maintains and exceeds a variety of accreditation requirements that were designed to ensure high quality educational standards. MSU is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. During its most recent re-accreditation, MSU was commended for an "extremely high level of productivity and effectiveness." In addition to national accreditation, many of MSU’s colleges, departments and programs also maintain rigorous accreditation credentials through discipline specific agencies.
