History
Thereafter, the number of colleges increased, and in 1994-95, the University had 41 post-graduate departments, 209 affiliated colleges and 118 recognized research institutions, with an enrollment of 1,70,000 students for both the under-graduate and post-graduate courses in different faculties.

The university has about 307 recognized research institutes. Research institutions that have been recognized by the university for research include institutions of national importance like the National Chemical Laboratory (NCL), MACS, CWPRS, NIV, Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics, Deccan College among others.

The Employment Information and Guidance Bureau promotes employment schemes for assisting students in securing gainful employment. It also provides entrepreneurial guidance to the students to start their own business under the self-employment scheme.

It also asks university representatives on the performance of universities, and evaluates university resources, teacher salaries, graduation rates, student academic achievements and satisfaction. After calculating and comparing these criteria, U.S. News ranks the top international universities accordingly.
Student services
Located at the main entrance of the University, the Students Facilitation Center aims at providing important services under one roof to the students of University of Pune. Presently, the services on offer include applying for and receiving various documents/certificates related to Examination section and BCUD section.
Housing services
The University has a chain of seven Boys' hostels and six Girls' hostels providing accommodation to more than 1221 students. It also has a University Guest House, which is comfortable and well-furnished, and has more than 34 rooms with dining facilities. The Set Bhavan Guest House has 16 single rooms and 16 double rooms with an attached kitchenette. Further, the University also has residential facility for about 115 teaching faculty and about 294 non-teaching staff on the Campus. All the facilities are being restored and renovated in a phased manner.
Library services
The Jayakar Library is one of the best centers of reference and information in the country:
- subscribes to Indian and foreign research journals, receives periodicals on gratis/exchange basis (more than 4,50,627 books and journals)
- inter-library loan facility
- has preserved a wealth of ancient Indian texts
- has computerized all library activities using RFID Technology
ICT services
Information and Technology Parks, Internet facility with wireless connectivity, public telephones-STD/ ISD, photocopy and scanning, linear and non-linear video editing facilities are made available on the campus.
Medical services
- Round the clock medical facilities are available on the Campus for the resident staff and students, providing routine medical facilities.
- ECG, eye checkups and dental treatments as well as special medical consultancy.
- Services of a Resident Doctor and an ambulance for emergency cases.
Campus life
Spread over a vast area of 411 acres, the University has an exceptionally beautiful and picturesque campus. The lush green lawns adorned with beautiful fountains of the British times and the majestic building of the University are a constant source of attraction to the aesthetically oriented people of Pune, filmmakers, musicians and celebrities.
There are a number of buildings on the Campus such as the Administrative Building, Set Bhavan, buildings of various Post Graduate Departments, Students Welfare Department, Competitive Examination Center, Jayakar Library, Humanities Building, Printing Press, Boys, and Girls Hostels, a number of Canteens, a Health Center and a Refectory.
Sports facilities
- The University Campus has basketball courts, four auditoriums, and an amphitheater, sprawling parks and gardens, volleyball courts, cricket and football grounds, a gymnasium and a sports hostel.
- The Sports Complex has a large open ground for outdoor Indian and European team-games and athletics. In addition, facilities for indoor games are also available. Accommodation for approximately 80 sportsmen and women has been constructed and plans for further expansion. Fields for cricket and football have been newly made and natural lawn has been laid. Indoor game facilities are being created. A new Olympic size swimming pool is under construction.
The Savitribai Phule Pune University has been accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) at 'A' level in the year 2011.
